Used To
[used to + VERB]
Example:
- I used to go to the beach every day.
It is better not to use "used
to" in questions or negative forms; however, this is sometimes done in
informal spoken English. It is better to ask questions and create negative
sentences using Simple Past.
USE
1 Habit in the Past
"Used to" expresses the
idea that something was an old habit that stopped in the past. It indicates
that something was often repeated in the past, but it is not usually done now.
Examples:
- Jerry used to study English.
- Sam and Mary used to go to Mexico in the summer.
- I used to start work at 9 o'clock.
- Christine used to eat meat, but now she is a vegetarian.
USE
2 Past Facts and Generalizations
"Used to" can also be used
to talk about past facts or generalizations which are no longer true.
Examples:
- I used to live in Paris.
- Sarah used to be fat, but now she is thin.
- George used to be the best student in class, but now Lena is the best.
- Oranges used to cost very little in Florida, but now they are quite expensive.
"Used
to" vs. Simple Past
Both Simple Past and "Used to" can be used
to describe past habits, past facts and past generalizations; however,
"used to" is preferred when emphasizing these forms of past
repetition in positive sentences. On the other hand, when asking questions or
making negative sentences, Simple Past is preferred.
Examples:
- You used to play the piano.
- Did you play the piano when you were young?
- You did not play the piano when you were young.
ACTIVE
/ PASSIVE
Examples:
- Jerry used to pay the bills. Active
- The bills used to be paid by Jerry. Passive

Fungsi Used to
Used
to yang kita gunakan disini bukanlah bentuk Kata Kerja 2 dari Use, melainkan
satu kesatuan kata yang berarti “biasanya”. Dalam Bahasa Inggris penggunaan kata
tersebut banyak menghiasi percakapan. “Used to do” berbeda dengan “to be used
to doing” dan “to get used to doing”.
Used to do
Kita
pakai “used to” untuk sesuatu yang terjadi secara reguler di masa yang
lampau namun kejadiannya tidak lama.
- I used to smoke a packet a day but I stopped two
years ago.
(Saya biasanya merokok sebungkus per hari namun saya sudah berhenti 2 tahun yang lalu) - Tom used to greet us but when he became a boss,
he has never done it anymore.
(Tom biasanya menyapa kami tetapi ketika dia menjadi seorang bos, dia tidak pernah menyapa kami lagi) - I used to drive to work.
(Dulu saya biasanya naik mobil ke tempat kerja)
To
be used to doing
Untuk menjelaskan situasi atau
kejadian yang biasa (menyatakan kebiasaan).
- I’m used to studying English by myself.
(Saya sudah terbiasa belajar bahasa Inggris sendiri) - He is used to writing with his left hand.
(Dia sudah terbiasa menulis dengan tangan kirinya) - We have been used to living in this extreme
weather.
(Kami sudah terbiasa hidup dalam cuaka yang ekstrim seperti ini)

Structure
of Be used to
The structure is:
subject + be + used to + object
|
subject
|
main verb
be |
not
|
used to
|
object
|
+
|
I
|
am
|
|

|
horses.
|
-
|
He
|

|
not
|
used to
|
horses.
|
We
|
aren't
|
used to
|
horses.
|
||
?
|
Are
|
you
|
|
used to
|
horses?
|
If the object invoves a verb, we use
the -ing form:
I
|
am
|
not
|
used to
|
being lied to.
|
He
|
is
|
|
used to
|
working late.
|
We
|
aren't
|
used to
|
taking the bus.
|
|
Are
|
you
|
|
used to
|
cooking?
|
Why do we use -ing for a verb
after be used to? Because we always use -ing for a verb after a
preposition - and the to is a preposition.
Use
of Be used to
The be used to expression is
for talking about something that is familiar to us or easy for
us. For example:
- I am used to driving on the left.
It means that it is not a problem
for me to drive on the left of the road. I am Japanese. In Japan, people drive
on the left. Now I am living in the USA where people drive on the right. Of
course, I drive on the right in the USA, but when I go to Japan it is easy for
me to drive on the left because "I am used to it".
Look at these examples.
- I am used to hard work.
- I am used to working hard.
- He is not used to New York.
- He isn't used to living in New York.
- Are you used to fast food?
- Are you used to eating quickly?
Tenses
We can use be used to in any tense. We just conjugate the verb be in the tense that we need. Look at these examples:- When we lived in Bangkok, we were used to hot weather.
- I have been used to snakes for a long time.
- You will soon be used to living alone.

Untuk membuat kalimat ini used
to ditambah dengan infinitive (verb 1):
- He used to make his clothes by himself. Dia dulu biasa membuat pakaian sendiri.
- We used to see the movie every week. Dulu kami biasa nonton film seminggu sekali.
- Mother used to phone me three times a month. Dulu ibu biasa menelpon saya tiga kali sebulan.
- Mr. Stark used to come late to the office. Dulu dia biasa datang terlambat ke kantor
- Grandpa used to work in this office. Kakek dulu bekerja di kantor ini.
Untuk mebuat kalimat negative, Used
to diubah menjadi didn’t use to.
Misalnya:
- I didn’t use to have breakfast. Saya dulu tidak biasa sarapan.
- He didn’t used to drink wine. Dulu dia tidak biasa minum anggur.
- They didn’t use to go to school on foot. Dulu mereka tidak biasa jalan kaki ke sekolah.
- We didn’t use to write using computer. Dulu kita tidak biasa menulis dengan komputer.
- My son didn’t use to play play station. Dulu anak saya tidak biasa main play station.
Untuk membuat kalimat interrogative
atau kalimat tanya, kita tinggal meletakkan did+subject+use to+verb 1.
Contohnya:
- Did you use to share your laptop with your daughter? Apakah dulu kamu biasa barengan laptop dengan ank perempuanmu?
- Did she use to go to the office by bus? Apakah dulu dia biasa pergi ke kantor naik bis?
- Did they use to sell the house? Apakah dulu mereka biasa jual rumah?
- Did you use to dream of me? aapakh kamu dulu memimpikanku?
- Did you use to visit her house? Apakah kamu dulu biasa mengunjungi rumahnya?
